Phillip Moraghan’s imagination was fired when he had the opportunity to see first-hand many wine regions in Switzerland and France. The pinnacle was Burgundy and its Pinot Noir. After an 18 month search Phillip Moraghan chose Lancefield in the Macedon Ranges because of its well-drained volcanic soils, moderate rainfall and high altitude. The Curly Flat site was acquired in 1989 and in that year Phillip teamed up with Jeni Kolkka. Fortunately, Jeni shared Phillip’s dream. Together with a wonderful team, they built Curly Flat from the romantic idea to a romantic reality.
From the outset, Phillip and Jeni had a clear focus on vinifying world-class cool-climate Pinot Noir & Chardonnay. With a total 33 acres of hand tended vines, they and the Curly Flat team were committed to creating world-class wines that are an expression of both site and variety.
Jenifer and Phillip were determined to build quality in every aspect of their operation and they poured every resource into their 'baby', Curly Flat without compromise in the pursuit of excellence in wine quality with little or no regard to short-term or even medium-term return on investment. This no-compromise approach that has been vital to the Curly Flat ethos.
Phillip drove the vineyard and wine style. Jeni took over the running of the business. In 1991 Robert Kolkka joined the team being the “man on the ground” as Phillip and Jeni both worked full time in finance until 2000. Over the years, Robert has played a major role in planting the vines, building the trellis frames, project management of the building of the winery and maintenance and infrastructure and for several years was the vineyard manager.
In 2017, Jeni accepted Phillip’s offer to acquire his interest in Curly Flat. As of October 2017, Curly Flat is owned and operated by Jenifer Kolkka. Matt Harrop (ex Shadowfax) joined the team to take the helm of grape and wine production alongside our existing skilled team.
The Curly Flat team have interesting and diverse backgrounds along to accompany the great knowledge they have acquired over many vintages in the vineyard and the winery. Our vineyard team consist of Robert Kolkka a highly skilled carpenter by trade, Lisa Kimmorley, a business analyst with a degree in communications, Damien Hall a background in Aquaculture, Chris Dunn with great hospitality skills, Todd Petit an experienced Chef, Jenn Smith Turner who has loved farm work all her life. Our winery team, led by Matt Harrop, is chiefly assisted by Ben Kimmorley along with Brandon Kolkka who both have wine industry and hospitality experience. And not to forget our great office team consisting of Caitlin, Briley and Viv who provide great service to each of our valued customers. Interestingly, many of the vineyard team have been with Curly Flat more than 12 years – most unusual, yet highly valued.
The overall combining thread is that everyone, whether they be in the vineyard, winery or office, are focused on delivering the best wines possible from our carefully selected and nurtured site.
Also, a special mention to the late Laurie Williams the renowned Macedon Ranges pioneer of Flynn and Williams who was a mentor for the Curly Flat team in the early days of establishing the vineyard and greatly influenced their early grape growing experiences. Thank you Laurie!
